What is Y2k Fashion?
Y2k fashion first became popularised in the late 90s and early 2000s. The name originated from the thought that computers wouldn’t be able to process dates beyond December 31st 1999. The origins of the style were characterised by a digital/cyber look due to the advances in technology like mobile phones and video games. The most common colours were silver, black, chrome and bright oranges.
It is important to mention that the y2k fashion aesthetic was heavily influenced by the black community especially people like: Aaliyah, TLC, Rihanna, Miss Teeq, Blaque, Brandi & Monica, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Naomi. However, they were called ghetto and trashy for this. When celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears started dressing like this it became more accepted in the mid 2000s.
Nowadays, the y2k aesthetic is quite different and just takes the main trends from the 2000s. Some aesthetics that might get confused with y2k is indie and soft girl aesthetics because they are quite similar.
How To Style Y2k Fashion:
Y2k fits normally include bright bold colours like pink. Other colours like blue, red and green are also worn a lot. The outfits tend to be monochromatic so just one colour.
Small Tight Tops
Small tank tops and baby tees are essential when it comes to your outfits. The top doesn’t have to be anything in particular, just really small.
Low Rise and Baggy Jeans
High-waisted jeans was generally not a thing in the 2000s. So if you really want to embrace the style it would be a good idea to buy some low rise jeans. Baggy jeans were also worn a lot so you can switch it up sometimes.
If you prefer a more street style look, make sure to have a range of oversized jackets in your wardrobe. From items like fur to racer jackets.
Leisurewear that you didn’t exercise in became very trendy so people started wearing tracksuits more. They were normally bright colours pink and blue like we’ve already discussed.

Paris Hilton once said that “skirts should be the size of a belt.. life’s short, take risks”. As a fashion icons from the 2000s you should definitely take her advice.
Like any aesthetic, you have specific accessories to go with it. You should try and fill your collection with staple items such as 2000s glasses, bucket hats, big hoops, chains, trainers and baguette bags.
Y2k Fashion Websites And Places You Can Buy From:
Now you might be thinking where should I go to find all these things. I have a few suggestions for you. Start by asking your parents for some of their old clothes. They did live through the 2000s. You could also check out any thrift stores or charity shops. If you don’t find luck with any of these, you can try some online stores.
