One of the 2022 trend predictions was that the preppy style would become more popular again. This was absolutely correct as on all my social media platforms and in person, I see people dressed in this style. One key item for this style is the pleated skirt, so it is essential that you know how to correctly style it. Hopefully, in this post, you’ll learn how.
My History With Pleated Skirts
About 6 months ago, I would have never dreamed about wearing a skirt anywhere. For some reason, I just couldn’t find the will or courage to wear one. However, in the last 2 weeks, I have worn a pleated skirt in public twice. To get to this point, I took myself out of my comfort zone and bought my first pleated skirt. After that, I looked up some outfits that I liked, chose my favourite one and then I recreated it.
From this point on, I was able to wear any skirt I like with confidence.
Types of Pleated skirts You Should Have In Your Wardrobe
- Black
- White
- Plaid
As long as you have these 3 types of skirts in your wardrobe, you are pretty much set. You will be able to make so many different outfits with them. Especially, once you have like 3-4 different plaid skirts. Also, if you like to wear more colourful outfits, you might benefit from buying skirts in different colours other than black and white.
Different ways To Style Pleated Skirts
- White-collar + crew neck
This combo has become really popular during the last 2 years and some people might think that it is basic. However, I think that it is a very easy combo to do and can be recreated with lots of different items. You could also just wear a crewneck without the shirt underneath. It is totally up to you!

- White T-shirts
That being said you can also just wear a plain white t-shirt with any pleated skirt. This works quite well in spring and summer when the weather is nicer.

- Sweater vests
If you are really going for that preppy look, it would be a good idea to invest in a range of sweater vests. I would recommend getting one in cream, black and one with an argyle pattern to start with. You can also wear a long or short-sleeved shirt underneath.

- Turtle Necks
When it gets colder, I like to wear turtle necks under all my crew necks and jumpers. These work really well with pleated skirts and are easy to style.

- Oversized jacket
Once you have decided what you are going to wear with your pleated skirt, just wear an oversized jacket over it and it really pulls the look together. I specifically like to wear my black leather jacket with my skirts.

- Blazers
If you don’t want to wear an oversized jacket, you could always opt for a blazer. I personally really like short fitted blazers instead of longer ones but both work. If you like the preppy style, having a blazer is an absolute must.

- Ties
Ties are just a really fun accessory to wear with your outfit. Since it is a tie, the easiest way to style it is with a white shirt but you could experiment with what you wear it with.

- Knee-high boots
Knee-high boots are really trendy at the moment and look amazing with pleated skirts.

Where You Can Buy Pleated Skirts
I like to buy my skirts from Yesstyle because they have a great selection and are true to their size. Here are some that I have previously bought. They are the perfect length, not too short and they have built-in shorts as well. I got a black one in the size small and I am roughly about 5’2.
You might also be able to find some good pleated skirts on Amazon if you look hard enough. Here are some of the ones I found.
If you prefer shopping in person, some good places to check out are H&M, Zara or Berksha. If you’re able to you can visit your nearest thrift store or check out Vinted. I was able to find a really great white pleated skirt for only £8.
That’s all for today and I hope you enjoyed this post! Hopefully, these tips are really useful and can help you style your pleated skirt better. Comment below your favourite outfit.
