What Is Grunge Aesthetic Fashion?

Grunge fashion is the clothing, accessories, and hairstyles of the grunge music genre and subculture. It has been gaining lots of popularity over the years since the 2000s. Grunge fashion is characterised by thrift-store clothing, often worn in a loose, and its edgy look.

Grunge Aesthetic Origins

The grunge aesthetic became popular in the 1990s in Seattle, Washington. It was mainly worn by Gen X and can be defined as an anti-consumerism youth movement. It was popularised by music bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, 7 year bitch and the temple of the dog.

Types of Grunge Aesthetics

Dark Grunge Aesthetic

Is probably the most popular grunge aesthetic and what you’ll see the most today. It is made up of dark colors like black, grey, brown and green.

Soft Grunge Aesthetic

This aesthetic resembles what the grunge aesthetic started out as. Favouring plaid t-shirts and blue washed jeans. It is not as dark as the previous aesthetic.

Fairy Grunge Aesthetic

This aesthetic is a mix between the grunge and cottagecore aesthetic. Typical items include long skirts, lacey tops, cardiagns and crystal necklaces. This aesthetic favours the colours white, brown and green.

The Selection Of Colours Are Quite Dark

This might seem obvious but it is important to keep in mind when you pick out your outfits. The colours that are normally used are black, grey, brown and dark purple, green and red. However, you don’t just have to wear these colours but this is a good place to start. Black is normally used as a base colour and then people build on top of that. If you are having a hard time choosing a colour scheme, you should consider starting with this.

The Outfits Can Be Very Simple

A lot of grunge outfits are really basic. They typically include a graphic tee and some jeans with chains and that could just be the look. That being said, there is quite a lot of variation and not every outfit will be that simple. Basically don’t think about it too much and maybe look for some inspiration on Pinterest.

You Don’t Need A Huge Wardrobe

It can be very overwhelming when you start putting outfits together if you feel like you lack the correct clothing. Once you have some staple clothing you pretty much have all you need to have a large selection of outfits. Here are some essentials you should have in your wardrobe:

  • Long-sleeved striped and t-shirts
  • Graphic Tees
  • Oversized jumpers
  • Plaid trousers
  • Plaid Skirts
  • Ripped Jeans
  • Cargo Pants
  • Chains

I have linked to some websites where you will be able to find each item. You’ll probably need quite a few graphic tees and long-sleeved shirts. However, once you have 2-3 items of everything else, you’re pretty much set.

Don’t Forget To Oversize Sometimes

One thing I love about grunge aesthetic fashion is how everything can be oversized if you want it to. Normally people would either wear oversized hoodies or oversized trousers but you can wear both.

You Can Make It Complicated

Once you get the hang of it, you can make your as complicated and as dramatic as you want. This does require you to be quite creative but I think that just comes with time. The possibilities are endless and through this you can develop your own personal style more.

Accessories Can Really Help Your Outfit

This is very important when it comes to grunge outfits. Most outfits are very simple so adding a few simple accessories can take your outfit to the next level. These accessories include necklaces, chains, earrings, belts, bags, beanies and even what shoes you are wearing. Therefore, it’s always good to include accessories in your outfit.
