Being a confident person is essential to loving yourself and it helps you grow as a person. Now, when I say that, having too much confidence can be a bad thing sometimes and you need to know its limits. But that is not what this post is about. This post is going to tell you how to become more confident; why you need to be confident, and why it is important. This is the first post in my self-development series.
How To Become More Confident:
1.Stop comparing yourself to other people
Everyone has done this from a young child. It is part of being human; we want to compare ourselves to other people to become a ‘better’ person(in some sense). And when we do not reach those standards it begins to hurt us. We have to stop it in order to become confident. When we compare ourselves to others it is just a oppourtunity for us to look at ourselves and say ‘I am not good enough’. You are good enough. That is the only thing you need to know. Confidence is something that is built from how someone thinks about themselves. And if it is not in a positive, that can deeply hurt them.
2. Accept who you are
To be honest, I think this is all you need. Imagine you live in a town where everyone has blue hair. And it turns out you are the only person with purple hair. Your confidence will shrink because you don’t have blue hair. Maybe, you are not normal or people give you weird stares. Are you going to live your life wishing you had blue hair or are you going to find the best hairstyle you can and show off to other people. It is your choice. This is where confidence comes into play. It pushes you to ignore other people and think about yourself. It makes you remember how beautiful you are and why you are the best person on earth. Accepting yourself is a big part to play in boosting your confidence.
3.Set personal goals
Personal goals are amazing things to have. They help you grow as a person and strive for new things. At the beginning of something new you want to try or a challenge you face you have to make a decision. Can I do this or will I fail? If you say I can, you have the confidence that you will achieve this goal that you have and when you do that will make so very happy. On the other hand, if you say no you accept that you failed and it will make you look down on yourself. You begin to have thoughts like ‘What is wrong with me?’ ; ‘Why can’t I do anything’ or ‘Am I a failure?’. When you start feeling this way you begin to lose confidence in yourself and stop trying to try new things. Right now I am trying to learn korean and honestly I feel like I am failing. However, I know that if I try harder I will be able to speak it.
Positive thoughts. This is so important. Having positive thoughts can change the outcomes of things in your life. If you start to think that you are ugly, then when you look in the mirror you see features that you don’t like about yourself. After a while you can only remember the time when you hated yourself. You then start to think ‘ When did I start hating myself’ or ‘Why do I think I am ugly’. This started from the first day you thought you were ugly and you didn’t tell yourself why you are beautiful. No negative thoughts please. Especially if it is about yourself.
5.Do hard things first
Sometimes it is nice to have a challenge. If you try all the easy things first you will become scared of the harder things. This will make you doubt yourself in the long run. Being courageous and being confident are linked. Just remember that for the future.

- Practice mindfulness
- Keep a gratitude journal
- Express yourself
- Spend time with loved ones

7.Spend time with yourself
Me, myself and I. You need some time by yourself to just appreciate that you are living. You can enjoy this time in many ways. So starting a hobby is very good because you will be doing something you love. I personally love to listen to music, read books, eat, dance, blog and watch tv shows. All of these things keep me very happy. Sometimes spending time with yourself is all you need to fall in love with yourself again.
